Looking at WWE 24: Goldberg

So it’s been a little while since I’ve written one of these up about wrestling, but to be honest…there really hasn’t been a whole lotta good stuff worth writing about lately. I mean WWE’s been doing an alright job at giving us some fresh matches like when they pulled AJ Styles off the South America tour to fill in for an ill Bray Wyatt at the last Pay Per View or reforming The Shield…but for whatever reason, I just haven’t had the motivation to write about the product — until now.

Monday night, after Raw went off the air, WWE aired another installment of their documentary series WWE 24 on the WWE Network. If you haven’t seen any of these pieces, please go out of your way to find them as they’re some of the best programming WWE puts out. Remembering Bobby “The Brain” Heenan #RIPBobbyHeenan

Cellular phones are becoming such an integral part of our everyday lives these days. We rely on them for so much…keeping up on social media, keeping in touch with family and friends, getting sports scores, weather updates and important news tidbits all on the go. Most of the time, it’s great to be up on everything going on in your world all on this singular device you can keep in your pocket. Tonight wasn’t one of those times for me.

After leaving work tonight, I made a stop for a soda at a 7-Eleven for the ride home. Just before putting the car back in gear to leave, I checked my phone and saw a notification from Google telling me that legendary wrestling manager and commentator, Bobby “The Brain” Heenan has passed away at the age of 73. Boy can that put a real damper on your day. And I’ll say this…I’ve been looking for a reason to write another one of these columns recently and coming up empty, but while I’ve now found a reason to write one, I really hate that I have to add yet another entry to my “Career Retrospective/Tribute” section here. NXT TakeOver Brooklyn III: A Live Perspective

It’s been called the WrestleMania of NXT by none other than the man behind the scenes running the whole operation, Triple H. This year was NXT’s third trip to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY to run their biggest show of the year and as usual…they didn’t disappoint!

A little backstory here…I was at the first one of these things two years ago when Bayley defeated Sasha Banks for the NXT Women’s Title, Finn Bálor successfully defended his NXT Championship in a ladder match with Kevin Owens and Jushin “Thunder” Liger wrestled in a WWE ring for the first and only time of his career to date. Goodness, Gracious, (WWE) Great Balls of Fire!

So here we are, another 2 weeks removed from the last WWE Pay Per View…this time, it’s Money In The Bank, and I honestly had to sit here a minute to try to remember which one it was! Normally, trying to remember the name of the last Pay Per View is (and should be) a fairly simple thing to do since something notable usually happens on these shows…except for the most part these days, nothing notable really happens on these shows anymore. They’re just filler, and as I mentioned in a past writing here, it’s really hard to get psyched up for one of these shows every two weeks now. However, I stand corrected this week…if given the proper build with the right storytelling, one can get excited for a non-big 4 Pay Per View!

It’s PPV time again, but is it too soon?

So last weekend, I finished my review of the previous weekend’s festivities surrounding the Backlash Pay Per View. Now, looking ahead to this weekend, it’s Pay Per View time again for WWE as the Raw brand presents Extreme Rules. Now maybe it’s just me, but that’s an awful short amount of time between shows! And don’t get me wrong, I understand the “added value for Network subscribers” deal, but I never had a problem waiting a whole month for a Pay Per View to allow for a decent build to the show from a storyline perspective…but this is 2017, a time when WWE rushes through storylines and doesn’t permit anything to have a slow burn.

Wrestling shows: memories, my favorite buildings and seats

So the other day, I attended the NXT house show down in Asbury Park, NJ at the Asbury Park Convention Hall. It was my second year in a row seeing a wrestling show there and I’ve gotta say…there’s probably no other place around here I’d rather take in a show!

I’ve been a wrestling fan now for well over 20 years, and during that time, I’ve been to Pay Per View events, Monday Night Raw, Smackdown tapings and plenty of non-televised house show events. I’ve attended shows at large venues like Newark, NJ’s Prudential Center, NYC’s Madison Square Garden, Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, NJ, the Nassau County Veterans’ Memorial Coliseum and have also hit small venues like the Grand Ballroom at NYC’s Manhattan Center, the Rahway Rec Center, the 23rd Street Armory in Philadelphia, the VFW Hall in Manville, NJ, the American Legion Hall in Dunellen, NJ and most recently, the Asbury Park Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ. Thoughts on the WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament #WWEUKCT

So WWE decided to begin to expand again. And I know what you’re thinking: I thought they were already a worldwide brand? To that, I’ll say yes, in a way they are. However, they are an American based wrestling promotion which tours the world. In all honesty, the UK fans only get to see their favorite WWE Superstars live maybe twice a year. So to that end, I believe WWE is looking to expand to run somewhat regularly in the United Kingdom (and probably other countries as well).

To achieve this, they have decided to create a new championship and run a 2-night tournament in the UK with some of the country’s top independent performers to crown a new champion who will continue to work in the UK and be spotlighted on a new featured series on the WWE Network. Podcast & Wrestling Thoughts

So it’s been awhile since I wrote one of these up and to say that a LOT has gone down in the wrestling world would be the understatement of the year. So I’ll do my best to organize my thoughts on everything prowrestling related.

First off, The Marking Out Podcast has been put on long-term and possibly permanent hiatus.
