Saying Goodbye to “The Bad Guy” Razor Ramon, a.k.a. Scott Hall

…Hey yo! Not gonna lie…I’ve been dreading this day now for over a decade.

News broke of the health complications following a hip replacement surgery that Scott Hall was having performed. In an interview, Sean “Xpac” Waltman noted that the isolation during the pandemic was rough on Scott. He started drinking more again and put some weight back on. When Hall fell & broke his hip, he was unable to move & was laying on the ground, unable to get to the phone. He laid there for a few days until his friend, “Diamond” Dallas Page found him while doing a wellness check on him on March 12th. He underwent surgery at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, GA, and during the surgery, a blood clot came dislodged, which caused him to have three heart attacks and was put on life support. Then, on the morning of March 14th, Kevin Nash posted a tribute to his friend, noting that Scott was being kept on life support until the family could arrive to pay their respects and say their goodbyes. At which time, Scott Hall, my favorite wrestler of all time, the guy who “oozed machismo” as Razor Ramon in the WWF, the guy who kickstarted the New World Order, “The Bad Guy” that everyone loved….left this world forever.

Owen Hart & the Hart Foundation

So I’m pretty sure most of you reading this blog can tell…I’ve been a fan of professional wrestling for a fairly long time, and when you follow anything for the amount of time I’ve followed professional wrestling, you’re going to have a lot of memories of some very big events that have happened during that time span. For example, I can remember watching these major events that shaped the history of professional wrestling like it was yesterday: Hulk Hogan turning on Randy Savage and WCW to form the New World Order with Scott Hall & Kevin Nash, Bret Hart’s exit from the WWF in what is now known as the Montreal Screwjob, or D-Generation X storming the Norfolk Scope — the building WCW had been running that night, or how about when “Stone Cold” Steve Austin cut his infamous promo after winning the King of the Ring on a defeated Jake “The Snake” Roberts, coining the phrase of “you talk about your psalms, talk about John 3:16…Austin 3:16 says I just whipped you ass!”, or when Vince McMahon stood in a WWF ring on one side of the split screen while his son Shane stood in the middle of a WCW ring on the other side after the purchase of WCW.

Those were all notable moments in the history of professional wrestling where I’m sure if you were there watching, you can remember exactly where you were when you saw them. There’s another night I’d like to mention here now that I can also say I remember where I was and the emptiness I felt that night when it happened (and that same feeling of emptiness & sadness is rushing over me now as I relive that night while typing this), and that’s the night that Owen Hart fell to his death from the catwalk at Kansas City, Missouri’s Kemper Arena at the WWF Over The Edge Pay Per View, May 23rd, 1999…now 20 years ago last month.

Remembering Bobby “The Brain” Heenan #RIPBobbyHeenan

Cellular phones are becoming such an integral part of our everyday lives these days. We rely on them for so much…keeping up on social media, keeping in touch with family and friends, getting sports scores, weather updates and important news tidbits all on the go. Most of the time, it’s great to be up on everything going on in your world all on this singular device you can keep in your pocket. Tonight wasn’t one of those times for me.

After leaving work tonight, I made a stop for a soda at a 7-Eleven for the ride home. Just before putting the car back in gear to leave, I checked my phone and saw a notification from Google telling me that legendary wrestling manager and commentator, Bobby “The Brain” Heenan has passed away at the age of 73. Boy can that put a real damper on your day. And I’ll say this…I’ve been looking for a reason to write another one of these columns recently and coming up empty, but while I’ve now found a reason to write one, I really hate that I have to add yet another entry to my “Career Retrospective/Tribute” section here. Remembering Chyna

So it’s been awhile since I recorded since we’re remodeling our kitchen and everything is all over the place in my basement, where I do all my recording and it’s not really accessible to me at the present time.  So there have been a number of things going on in the world of Professional Wrestling, sadly what I’m here to write and comment about today isn’t one of the more positive stories of the last couple of weeks.

Just the other day, it was reported by TMZ that Chyna, Joanie Laurer was found dead in her apartment. Shortly thereafter, the twitter universe exploded with comments from wrestlers from all around the globe saying how much of a pioneer she was for womens’ wrestling, about how she broke down so many barriers and was an inspiration to so many. Remembering the career of Bryan Danielson a.k.a. WWE’s Daniel Bryan

So yesterday, a tweet was sent out from the account of WWE’s Daniel Bryan. It read as follows:

Due to medical reasons, effective immediately, I am announcing my retirement. Tonight on Raw, I’ll have a chance to elaborate.

It’s kinda been the elephant in the room for the last few months as after being the conquering underdog hero at WrestleMania XXX, almost two years ago now, then going out with a nerve injury only a couple months afterwards. He made a return to action at last year’s Royal Rumble, made the run to WrestleMania 31, where he won the Intercontinental Title in a ladder match and was set to start to rebuild the perceived value of that title following WrestleMania, only he didn’t. He suffered a concussion and ended up having to forfeit the title, and has been out of action ever since. Continue reading “Remembering the career of Bryan Danielson a.k.a. WWE’s Daniel Bryan”

The Passing of Rowdy Roddy Piper #ThankYouRoddy #RIPHotRod

Rowdy Roddy Piper.

Where do I even begin?

The world was saddened to hear on Friday that yet another professional wrestler has been taken from us at an age entirely too young. Roddy died of a heart attack in his sleep Thursday night at the age of 61. I didn’t get word of his passing until Friday afternoon when I was on my way home from work and TMZ had reported it. Immediately, my phone started blowing up…friends were posting the story to Facebook, I was getting Twitter notifications, and text messages informing me of this sad story. I continued to play the telephone game, relaying the message on to other wrestling fan friends who I hadn’t heard from and one by one, I kept receiving the same responses from them that I had. I was overcome with just an immense amount of sadness, knowing that yet another piece of my childhood has left us. Continue reading “The Passing of Rowdy Roddy Piper #ThankYouRoddy #RIPHotRod”

Ultimate Warrior

I’m gonna give you a little window into my day to day life…in the morning, I usually get up at about 5:45 to get my son up, fed, dressed & ready to go to the baby sitter’s house. My wife is usually getting herself ready while I’m doing all this, and then once she’s out the door with him, it’s time for me to get myself ready. While I’m feeding him, I typically put the news on to see what’s going on in the world, to see how warm it’s supposed to be today and to see if there are any traffic reports that impact my ride in to NYC in the morning.

This morning was no different. So once he was ready, I started to get ready & she left with him. The TV tends to stay on usually until I’m ready to walk out the door, so the news continues while I’m in the shower, getting dressed, etc. So when I was finally out of the bathroom & heading in to the bedroom to figure out what I was going to wear today, I caught a news story about the Ultimate Warrior passing away last night. My morning just stopped. Continue reading “Ultimate Warrior”

Remembering The British Bulldog, Davey Boy Smith

Davey Boy Smith — we knew him as “the British Bulldog” — passed away while vacationing in British Columbia, Canada.  He was 39 years old.

At present, no official cause of death is known, though published reports have suggested either a heart attack or an accidental choking death may be possibilities.  In any case, what is certain is this: the wrestling world has lost another performer at far too young an age.
