WWE Survivor Series 2023 Review: Matches, Surprises, and Epic Returns

Wow, where to start?

First & foremost, I really want to give props where they’re due: Triple H has done a masterful job of putting together a product in which a large part of the roster is incredibly over with the crowd! I mean if you look up & down this roster, just about everyone elicits a good crowd response!

From your World Champion, Seth Rollins, Sami Zayn, Cody Rhodes, Gunther, The Judgment Day, and all the women: Becky, Bayley, Iyo Sky, Zoey Stark, Rhea Ripley…the crowd cares about everyone! Even Dominic Mysterio does his job incredibly well of being a smarmy, underhanded heel who’s not afraid to take the easy way out, and the crowd loves to boo him for it! And this isn’t John Cena or Xpac “go away” heat, the crowd is reacting exactly as they’re supposed to to this ass. Bravo!

Vince McMahon, John Laurinaitis & Paralegals with NDAs…Oh My!

Oh boy to I have a lot to unpack here today. So Vince McMahon has “temporarily” stepped down as Chairman & CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment because of an internal investigation which is being conducted by the Board of Directors into a story that was reported to them of a paralegal by a third party, citing an affair with Vince and an ensuing $3M non-disclosure agreement upon her termination.

Apparently, upon looking into these allegations, this one paralegal wasn’t the first of her kind to be given such a deal, and even WWE’s Head of Talent Relations, John Laurinaitis has also been implicated in other like findings. Talk about doing “what’s best for business” and “people power”! Man, does that stuff not age well these days!

I’m a lapsed fan…

I’ve been a prowrestling fan for a large portion of my life, however considering the directions that the business & really, WWE moreso in general have taken, I’m finding myself more and more sitting here on the outside, looking in on a business I used to live & breathe almost 24/7. I’ve heard guys like Dave Scherer & Mike Johnson on PWInsider.com speak of the lapsed fan who checks in from time to time and continues to leave again for one reason or another & I’ve now come to the conclusion that that group now includes me.

For us lapsed fans, we WANT to like the product, but there’s just a number of bad decisions whether it’s from a talent, creative or any other number of reasons that continue to turn us off from the product. I had been hoping that a return of fans to the arenas might change my stance, but even that doesn’t seem to make a difference to me now. Is it talent? Oh my God, yes! Is it just talent issues? Of course it’s not. Creative storytelling is certainly involved as well.

Anticipating Survivor Series Weekend

So last night, while recording Revival Radio, we kind of ran out of time and didn’t get to talk much about this weekend’s Survivor Series Pay Per View event. So I figured maybe I’d just do a writeup. This weekend’s shows should provide quite a lot of great matches for us fans to watch on the WWE Network! The NXT group starts the weekend off on Saturday night with the latest TakeOver event in which a gimmick match we haven’t seen in 20 years when SAnitY, The Authors of Pain with Roderick Strong & The Undisputed Era face off inside two rings surrounded by a cage in War Games.

Along with that awesome attraction, they’re giving us an NXT Title match between defending champion, Drew McIntyre & Andrade “Cien” Almas and will also determine a new NXT Womens Champion when Nikki Cross, Ember Moon, Peyton Royce & Mae Young Classic Tournament winner, Kairi Sane face off for the title that Asuka vacated upon leaving for Monday Night Raw. Other matches include: Kassius Ohno vs. Lars Sullivan and Aleister Black vs. Velveteen Dream. A pretty stacked card that also includes for the live audience, a match for the WWE UK Title when Pete Dunne defends his title against Johnny Gargano. For us not attending, that match will air on NXT next Wednesday and it’s sure to be another great match!

Looking at WWE 24: Goldberg

So it’s been a little while since I’ve written one of these up about wrestling, but to be honest…there really hasn’t been a whole lotta good stuff worth writing about lately. I mean WWE’s been doing an alright job at giving us some fresh matches like when they pulled AJ Styles off the South America tour to fill in for an ill Bray Wyatt at the last Pay Per View or reforming The Shield…but for whatever reason, I just haven’t had the motivation to write about the product — until now.

Monday night, after Raw went off the air, WWE aired another installment of their documentary series WWE 24 on the WWE Network. If you haven’t seen any of these pieces, please go out of your way to find them as they’re some of the best programming WWE puts out. Thoughts on the WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament #WWEUKCT

So WWE decided to begin to expand again. And I know what you’re thinking: I thought they were already a worldwide brand? To that, I’ll say yes, in a way they are. However, they are an American based wrestling promotion which tours the world. In all honesty, the UK fans only get to see their favorite WWE Superstars live maybe twice a year. So to that end, I believe WWE is looking to expand to run somewhat regularly in the United Kingdom (and probably other countries as well).

To achieve this, they have decided to create a new championship and run a 2-night tournament in the UK with some of the country’s top independent performers to crown a new champion who will continue to work in the UK and be spotlighted on a new featured series on the WWE Network. WrestleMania 32: The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same

So let’s get right into it…I wrote in my last blog a few of my issues with the card going into this past Sunday’s WrestleMania 32 and those issues I had weren’t addressed by WWE in any way shape or form. In fact, I believe they were magnified, highlighted and double-underlined. It’s like the creative team just threw up their arms and said “Whatever you want, Vince!” — which I’m pretty sure isn’t far off from what actually happened in the creative meeting going into the show. So let’s break it down here and I’ll explain why I really hated the outcomes of about 95% of this show.

Fist off, I want to let it be known that for as much as I didn’t like the outcomes of the matches…the matches themselves were mostly quite good and the guys and girls wrestling in the matches did the best they could with what they were given. Problem is, they weren’t given a whole heck of a lot to work with.

First on my list here starts with the ladder match for the WWE Intercontinental Title. I was actually stuck at work while this match went down, so I figured I’d pick up WrestleMania live and go back and watch whatever I missed the next day.
